The X Factor 2012 star James Arthur once suffered with such low self esteem that he insisted he was too ugly to be a pop star.
The singer’s half-sister, 17-year-old Charlotte, has lifted the lid on his self confidence problems but says James, 24, feels more comfortable with himself after rising to fame on the TV talent show.
Charlotte told the Daily Mail: “The family can see that James is so, so happy now.
“He never used to think he was attractive or that he looked like a rock star.
“But now he has lots of female fans, and his confidence has grown so much, it’s lovely to see.”
James has grown close to a number of his fellow contestants while taking part in the contest and was last week devastated to see friend Ella Henderson leave the competition.
The pair were forced to compete in the sing off on Sunday night’s live show after receiving the fewest votes from the public.
But the musician has the support of his large family who were on hand to lift his mood as they travel down to watch him perform each week.
Charlotte said: “We were all so shocked that both James and Ella were in the bottom two, I thought they would go straight to the finals.
“I was watching it on TV, as we are such a large family we take it in turn to go and watch James in London.
“It was horrible not to be there for him this time. The only thing I can think is that people think James is safe so aren’t bothering to vote.
“I spoke to James and he was gutted as he has been very close to Ella. He was gutted that she went home, although really, really relieved that he got through.”
However, James does still have friends left in the competition and has found a good mate in the form of fellow aspiring pop star Rylan Clark.
Charlotte said: “We’re glad he’s got Rylan, he loves their relationship.
“I’ve met Rylan and he’s such a nice guy. He’s the nicest, funniest guy ever.
“Him and James get on really well and he’s always making James laugh, so I’m glad James has got him in there.”
